Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop arrives in 4K UHD with a digital copy, sitting near the top of the sci fi action canon and still competing with the likes of The Terminator and Predator for sheer quotability and bite. Set in a collapsing Detroit where Omni Consumer Products is handed control of policing, it mixes brutal shootouts with sharp corporate satire, then doubles down on the tragedy of what’s left of Alex Murphy under the armour. In 4K, the film’s gritty textures and neon soaked night scenes tend to read more clearly, while the heightened TV adverts and news segments land even harder as part of the joke.
Who will get the most out of the 4K version?
If you already know the film, the extra clarity suits the practical effects, stop motion ED 209 chaos, and the deliberately grimy production design. If you’re new, it’s still a lean, nasty, funny crowd pleaser, with a surprisingly human core.
