Discworld fans will recognise The Fifth Elephant as one of the key City Watch novels, sitting in Terry Pratchett’s wider fantasy-satire range alongside Men at Arms and Jingo. It’s also a strong alternative to more traditional epic fantasy, swapping grand quests for politics, policing, and sharp social observation. Here, Commander Sam Vimes is pushed out of Ankh-Morpork and into Uberwald as a reluctant ambassador, where dwarfs, werewolves, and vampires all have competing interests, and diplomacy is just another kind of street work.

Who is this for?

If you like your fantasy character-led and funny, with a plot that still has real stakes, this is a great point in the Watch arc. It works best if you already know Vimes and his world, but Pratchett writes with enough context that you can keep up even if you’ve missed a book or two.
