Philips’ PUS8500 sits in the brand’s mid-range 4K line-up, aiming to tempt you away from similarly priced Samsung and LG sets by pairing a QLED panel with the company’s signature Ambilight. In 43 inches it’s a sensible size for bedrooms, smaller lounges or a desk-based gaming setup, while still delivering the sharper detail and HDR punch you’d expect from a modern 4K TV.
Is Ambilight actually worth having?
If you watch in the evening, Ambilight can make a bigger difference than you’d think: LEDs on the rear of the TV project coloured light onto the wall to match what’s on screen, which can reduce perceived eye strain and make the picture feel larger. It’s also great for mood lighting when you’re not watching anything.
- 43" 4K QLED – QLED colour helps brighter scenes and more vivid animation without needing a huge screen.
- Ambilight – adds immersion and softens harsh contrast in dark rooms.
